Creation of First School Garden in CONSA

September 9, 2011

Participants: Rose Lord from the non-profit organization, Food for Peace.

Students from Our Lady of Peace School worked with Rose Lord to create a Community Peace Garden. This activity was part of the DR Environmental Film Festival organized by FUNGLODE/GFDD. The objective of this initiative was to show the school and its surrounding communities the benefits of small vegetable gardens, without the need of huge tracts of land, where various types of vegetables, herbs and flowers can be grown. Through this activity, communities pull together and understand the importance of healthy food, harvested by their own hands. Following the workshop, participants were invited to FUNGLODE to see the documentary film, Play Again. After the film, there was a discussion about education and nature with Meg Merrill, the film's producer, Greg LeMieux, community coordinator of the documentary and Ms. Lord.

Since its inception the program has created a total of 26 vegetable gardens across the country in the provinces of Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Cristobal, Baní, Monte Plata, and Azua.
