March 18, 2013

Escondido, Baní, DR
Participants: Rose Lord, from the organization Make Gardens Not War; Botanist Cristiana Cruz Minier, Coordinator of the GFDD Community and School Gardens program; students and teachers.

The second phase of the GFDD/FUNGLODE Community and School Gardens program began with a workshop on seed conservation at the René Descartes School in Baní from 3-5 pm. The objective of the workshop is to give students additional training and to provide tools that will help them in the development of self-sustaining garden systems.

The program, which to date has provided materials and instruction to create and maintain vegetable gardens in 12 schools and 2 community centers in Santo Domingo, Baní and Azua, continues to expand by offering technical workshops in schools with previously established gardens as a means of enriching the students’ base of knowledge.

Since its inception the program has created a total of 26 vegetable gardens across the country in the provinces of Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Cristobal, Baní, Monte Plata, and Azua.
